What is a Millennial? The answer at Milan Design Week 2018

We all know what is a Millennial, right?

Millennials are those young people born before we entered the year 2000, all between 20-40 years old. This is the official definition but is it good enough to describe us?

I’m a Millennial too, and a proud one. That’s why I was all psyched when I discovered this amazing exhibition organised by Elle Decor, designed by DWA_Design Studio and called “OnLife: Millennials at Home“. It’s still my favourite exhibition from Fuorisalone 2018. I loved it, and if you are a Millennial you’ll love it too. Here’s why!

What is a Millennial?

The reason why the exhibition was so nice is that they associated Millennials with their peculiar way of interacting in a residential environment. As a result the exhibition wasn’t only about interior design but also social behaviours, which was really interesting.

Millennials were divided in 4 categories:

  • 20-25 >> Digital Natives. Those who see the house as a workshop to experiment with their passions. Potentially, they see the world as their home.
  • 25-30 >> Life Sharers. Those of us who share a lot, being mostly involved in co-housing and co-working situations.
  • 30-35 >> Family Fans. They value the concept of family and mainly live in the kitchen, which is the place where values related to nurturing and care are transmitted.
  • 35-40 >> Home Curators. Their home represent their own personal world and reflects their deepest tastes.

If you were wondering what is a Millennial now you can start asking yourself if you belong to any of these categories and whether your attitude reflects them. I am 30 and use both co-housing and co-working, spot on!

During the exhibition you could walk into a lot of different settings. Each one of them represented a group of Millennials, divided by age as described above. Millennial pink was omnipresent as well as multicolour lighting and a super welcoming atmosphere. It seemed to be into a daydreaming reality.

Technology was perfectly integrated in all the homes, with Google Home Mini, HP technology for a proper mobile home office and Vape Home Control.

There was also a great interactive wallpaper that came alive when touched.

I particularly liked the area with mini-bedrooms organised in bunk beds and Urban style looking. It’s my ideal home, with vinyls and a few well-chosen fancy accessories. Also the sticky notes randomly attached on the furniture were really cute!

At the end of the exhibition, we could choose one of our favourite settings and pose for a professional photograph. Obviously me and my friend Federica accepted immediately and went for the yellow sofa! Are we enough Millennial-looking?
